The Route

In Malaga, the captain and crew will be ready to welcome you on board on July 24th. After getting your first impressions and exploring the ship and your cabin, you’ll get to know everyone sailing with you to Brest. Once we’ve completed the safety drills, the real adventure can begin!

Out on Open Water
We depart from sunny Malaga on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The first major milestone? Crossing the famous Strait of Gibraltar. As we sail between Europe and Africa, we leave the Mediterranean behind and head for the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

A few curious dolphins will likely accompany the Clipper on her voyage to France. The North Atlantic is home to many marine mammals, and there is a great chance you’ll see gannets diving for fish. With a little luck, you might spot more than just dolphins, perhaps even a whale along the way!

Weather conditions and temperatures
During the summer, a fairly constant northern wind blows along the entire coast of Portugal and Spain. On this voyage, you will sail from the tropical heat of Málaga (approx. 30°C) into the fresh sea breeze of the Atlantic Ocean, eventually arriving in Brest, France, where temperatures are a pleasant 22°C.

On the way to…

A taste of the Mediterranean

Malaga is the sun-drenched starting point where you’ll step on board the Clipper for the very first time. Do you have some time to explore the city before embarking? This vibrant Andalusian port city has plenty to offer! The harbor is located right next to the city center, meaning most historic sights are within walking distance. In the heart of the city, you can admire the imposing cathedral or visit the Moorish Alcazaba fortress for a stunning view over the bay.

In the mood for a bit of culture? The Picasso Museum and the birthplace of the famous artist are practically around the corner from the harbor. On top of that, the city is packed with cozy tapas spots, modern boulevards, and sunny beaches to relax on for a bit. Whether you’re here for the culture or the great food, Malaga is the perfect starting point for your voyage on the Clipper Stad Amsterdam.

Malaga

The portal to the Atlantic

The passage through the Strait of Gibraltar is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the voyage. We leave the calm Mediterranean behind and set course for the open, challenging waters of the Atlantic Ocean. From the deck, you’ll have a spectacular view of the iconic Rock of Gibraltar on one side, while on a clear day, the coast of Morocco on the other side seems impressively close.

Strait of Gibraltar

The maritime gateway to Brittany

After more than 1,000 nautical miles, the Clipper arrives in Brest, a vibrant coastal city in western France. Did you know that Brest is almost but not quite the westernmost point of France? That honor goes to Pointe du Raz, a rugged cape slightly further south. Although we just miss that westernmost tip, the achievement is no less impressive: after days at sea, you trade the endless horizon for the lively harbor of Brest.

As you sail into the harbor, you’ll see imposing quays, historic forts, and with a bit of luck, other Tall Ships moored there. From the deck, you can spot the Château de Brest, a centuries old fortress that has guarded the harbor for generations. Further ahead lies the massive Pont de Recouvrance, the highest vertical-lift bridge in Europe, creating an impressive entrance for arriving ships.

Before you set foot on land, a delicious Captain’s Dinner awaits you on your final night on board—the perfect festive conclusion to the voyage. If you have some time before heading home, be sure to visit Océanopolis: a massive aquarium where you’ll come eye-to-eye with the underwater world you’ve just finished sailing across.

Brest

Step out of your comfort zone

Are you ready for the experience of a lifetime? As a trainee on this mighty ship, you aren’t just a passenger, you work alongside the crew and discover how life at sea really works. You’ll participate in a traditional watch system with four-hour shifts, where discipline and being on time (even at 4:00 AM!) are essential. Together with your team, you’ll learn the ropes: from navigation and steering to hoisting the sails and maintaining the ship.

Out on the open sea, you’ll have no cell service, providing a refreshing ‘social media detox’ and a real connection with the people around you. Working on a three-masted clipper is the ultimate team sport; without good communication and cooperation, you won’t get anywhere. You’ll push your limits in all weather conditions, discovering that you are physically and mentally much stronger than you thought. The skills you learn here – such as responsibility, perseverance, and leadership – will give a massive boost to your future career.

Of course, alongside the hard work, there is plenty of time for relaxation, games, and fun in a safe and positive atmosphere. You’ll return to shore with a huge boost in self-confidence, new friendships, and a backpack full of unique experiences. Are you ready for the adventure?

Bring your passport!
A passport is the standard requirement for our voyages and is strongly preferred. However, do you only have an ID card? For this specific trip, we are making an exception, and you may also board with a valid national identity card.

Always inquire about the rules for the validity and validity period of your passport/ID card for the country you are traveling to. In many countries, a passport is required to be valid for several months beyond the date of entry/departure (and an ID card will not be sufficient).

VISUM
It is crucial and your own responsibility to check and arrange visa requirements for the countries you are traveling to and traveling from.

The best way to determine if you need a visa to enter a specific country is by contacting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Our ship is equipped with satellite tech so you can access the internet while we’re out at sea. You’ll get 200 MB of data per person, per day—plenty for sending updates or checking in with home. But honestly? It’s way more fun to switch your phone off, leave the “real world” behind, and just be fully in the moment.

Heads up: Depending on our course and position, the satellite signal might drop out occasionally. This means a stable internet connection isn’t always guaranteed.

For the fans at home: Your friends and family can track our live location 24/7 via the homepage on our website. Let them follow your journey while you’re living it!

SHIP’S DOCTOR
When booking your trip, we request you to fill out a health declaration. If you provide any specific details here, the ship’s doctor may contact you to discuss your situation. The ship is equipped with a small infirmary. Upon boarding, our ship’s doctor may ask you again to provide them with as much information as possible about your medication use and/or physical limitations, so that they can take this into account.

Doctor onboard
The ship aims to have a doctor on board for multi-day sailing voyages. Your first point of contact on board for your medical inquiries, among other things, is the ship’s doctor.

SAFETY
During the welcome speech, the captain and the designated crew at their muster stations will brief you on safety aboard. Please be aware that the ship is in motion, which can cause items to fall, shift and doors to close. It is advisable to secure your belongings, keep doors closed and never hold onto a door frame.

Some countries require proof of vaccination before they’ll let you cross the border or head back home.

Travel requirements can change often, so we highly recommend checking the latest entry requirements before you set off. !

Before you head out, always double-check the latest travel advice and local rules for your journey to and from the ship. Keeping up with the requirements and getting yourself to the docks on time is your own responsibility.

Pro tip: We strongly recommend arriving in the port city at least one day before boarding. If your flight or train is delayed, we unfortunately can’t push back our departure time. Plus, an extra day gives you the perfect chance to explore the city before we set sail!

Please keep in mind that unfavorable weather conditions (e.g., lack or excess wind or headwind) may cause the captain to decide to sail on engine power, enter or exit a port earlier/later.

Temperature (Malaga)
Daytime: around 30°C
Nighttime: approximately 22°C
The weather in Málaga during this period is sun-drenched and warm, with clear blue skies and virtually no chance of rain.

Daytime: around 20°C (Brest)
Nighttime: approximately 15°C
The weather is generally pleasant, with sunny days and the occasional rain shower.

Please note: It is significantly cooler on deck at open sea due to the wind. Make sure to bring warm clothing for your hours on the water.

Wind Strength and Direction:
Along the Portuguese and Spanish coasts, a steady northerly wind often blows at 15-25 knots (Force 4-6). In the Strait of Gibraltar, the funnel effect can temporarily cause the wind to pick up to 28 knots (Force 7), whereas the Bay of Biscay may instead show periods of light winds and an impressive, long swell.

Ship Movement Intensity:
This ocean crossing is rated at level 3 due to varying wind strengths (Force 4-7 Bft), potential calm periods, and strong winds. Additionally, changing wind directions, possible influences from low-pressure systems, and ocean swell contribute to the challenge. This may mean motoring against the wind.
