With the support of bunker supplier Baseblue, the ship is running on 100% Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. This second-generation biodiesel, produced from vegetable oils and animal fats, is a renewable alternative to traditional diesel. The Clipper, owned by the Municipality of Amsterdam and by Randstad, contributing partner of SAIL 2025, was already adapted to run on this sustainable fuel five years ago.

The importance of contributing to a more sustainable maritime sector
Sustainability is a top priority for the Clipper, explains Jacoba Bolderheij, director of Clipper Stad Amsterdam: ‘Whenever the wind is insufficient, she sails on sustainable fuel where available. In doing so, the Clipper makes a modest yet meaningful contribution to a more sustainable maritime sector.’

‘Sustainability is also a major focus for the Dutch maritime sector. From ports to shipping companies and everything in between, everyone is working hard to reduce their footprint. While the share of sailing ships like the Clipper and other vessels of our sailing heritage is small within the sector, it is equally important that we contribute. We are proud that, with the support of Baseblue, we were able to refuel sustainably for the SAIL-In on August 20.’

Cleaner fuel solutions can be delivered reliably, even for high-profile operations
The collaboration between Stad Amsterdam and Baseblue highlights that sustainable choices in shipping are achievable here and now, aiming to inspire others in the industry to follow suit.

‘At Baseblue, we are committed to helping our partners turn ambition into action,’ says Daan Jager, Trader at Baseblue. ‘Supplying 100% HVO to the Clipper Stad Amsterdam for such an iconic event is not just about reducing emissions, it’s about showing the maritime sector what’s possible today. Together, we’re proving that cleaner fuel solutions can be delivered reliably, even for high-profile operations.’

Sustainable Dutch shore power during SAIL Amsterdam
During SAIL Amsterdam, the Clipper will use sustainable shore power wherever possible, resulting in fewer emissions, noise pollution, and cleaner air. All electricity during SAIL is generated at the offshore wind farm ‘Hollandse Kust Zuid’. Many Tall Ships on their way to SAIL in Amsterdam pass this wind farm as they arrive at IJmuiden. Offshore wind plays an important role in making the Dutch energy supply more sustainable. Vattenfall, energy partner of SAIL, ensures that all electricity is sustainably produced in the Netherlands.
