Race of The Classics

After sailing in The Netherlands on the North Sea in September and during the first weeks of October, we were in Rotterdam at Hotel New York for the last couple of days. Today was the start of the Race of The Classics. The ROTC is an event with teams from different universities and colleges sailing on traditional boats in a race. The teams are sponsored by various companies and these sponsors were invited today to witness the start of the race on board the Clipper.

A loud bang

A little after 12 at noon Simeon Tienpont, skipper of the Volvo Ocean Race boat 2017 of Team AkzoNobel, was in charge of the countdown while triple Olympic sailor Rutger van Schaardenburg actually fired the shot. With a loud bang and a lot of smoke the start of the race was a fact. The entire fleet passed the Clipper Stad Amsterdam on their way to the Erasmus Bridge and then towards the sea.

After the departure of our guests we removed the mooring lines as well and headed to Amsterdam. Next week at the "Oranjewerf" we will begin our annual maintenance.
