Sail the Panama Canal and visit Cartagena on the way!

Imagine what it will be like to sail through the Panama Canal on the sailing vessel Clipper Stad Amsterdam! This luxury sailing cruise starts at Curaçao, a unique Caribbean island and tropical paradise. After 3 days of non-stop sailing we will reach Cartagena located at the north coast of Colombia. There will be plenty of opportunity to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site!
The sailing will continue to the highlight of this luxury cruise: the passage through the Panama Canal starting at Colon and ending at Balboa.

The sun, warm temperatures, excellent food and fantastic sailing will make this an unforgettable holiday. Be part of this very first journey with the Clipper Stad Amsterdam exploring new horizons.

Day 1: Welcome dinner in Willemstad, Curaçao
In the harbor of Willemstad the captain and his crew welcome you on board with a tasty dinner. Your very first night on board will be spend near the famous Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge with the beautifully colorful Punda on the one side of St. Anna Bay and the historical important quarter Otrabanda on the other side. If you have the time we suggest to travel early and visit the countless breathtaking white sand and coral beaches on the island.

Day 2 - 5: Sailing to Cartagena in Colombia
The next morning after breakfast the sails will be set for the very first time on this luxury cruise. During the 3 day non-stop sail on the Caribbean Sea you will learn what sailing on a Tallship is all about. Go aloft in the main mast all the way to the very top if you like, help set sails or just relax. While the crew keeps the ship on course, delicious snacks and drinks will be served on deck.

Day 5 - 6: Exploring the city of Cartagena
Our first destination will be Cartagena in Colombia where we plan to arrive on Saturday in the early afternoon. This colonial jewel in the Caribbean has narrow streets & bustling plazas, magnificent churches and massive fortifications dating from the early 1600's. City highlights include a visit to Ciudad Amurallada - a colonial charming "walled city" protected by a fortress - located in the oldest part of Cartagena. Saint Philip of Barajas Fortresses and the Fort Ferdinand Fort must definitely be on your list of things to see! And there is more... Colombia’s most beautiful beaches Playa Blanca for example and the gold museum. The foodmarket "Mercado de Bazurto" to meet the locals or salsa dancing in one of the many bars, to just name a few.

If you prefer our hospitality manager will be more than happy to assist you with the booking of a guided tour or excursions.

Day 6 - 9: On the way to Colón
On Sunday evening January 14 we will leave for our next destination Colón. This city is situated near the entrance of the Panama Canal on the Atlantic side. While feeling the wind through your hair again it is an excellent time to reminisce about your stay in Cartagena on deck.

Do you like to be a little more active instead? Would you like to experience how things work on a ship like the Stad Amsterdam? Setting or furling the sails, keeping lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it. Feel free to join the ship’s crew standing watch in one of the three shifts. As a member of the Red Watch you can enjoy the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before, whilst in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

Day 9: At Colón
After a few days of active sailing we will arrive at Cristobal in Colón early Wednesday morning January 17. Colón is the gateway to the Miraflores Locks and a spot from where visitors can watch the man-made waterway which connects the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean. In the morning all necessary preparations will be made for the actual passage through the Panama Canal.

Day 9: Panama Canal Sail
On Wednesday, day 9 of this cruise, the time has come for the Clipper Stad Amsterdam to sail through the Panama Canal for the first time since her maiden trip in the summer of 2000!

One of the world's largest construction projects opened to traffic in 1914. The three sets of locks - Gatun, Pedro Miguel, and Miraflores - are only a small portion of the Panama Canal. During the constructions many natural and man-made waterways were created. Enjoy navigating around Barro Colorado Island near Gatun lake, passing under the Centennial Bridge, enter the Pedro Miguel Lock, cross Miraflores Lake to finally pass under the Bridge of the Americas in the Gulf of Panama (Pacific Ocean) near Panama City!

Some facts:
Length: 81 kilometers
Width: between 70 and 300 meters
Locks: 305 meters in length and 33,53 meters in width.
In 2016 the Panama Canal was expanded for bigger ships.

Day 10: Panama Canal Sail
Around 3 o'clock at night on January 18 after the Captain's dinner, we arrive at Balboa in Panama. After a few hours sleep our hospitality crew will prepare a delicious lunch which will mark the end of this luxury cruise. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon our crew will have to say goodbye to you.

Perhaps you will not say goodbye to Panama yet and extend the luxury cruise with a visit to Balboa and enjoy the yachts from all over the world. Or have a look at the American early 1900's colonial style buildings. Panama City is only a short distance away and worth paying a visit as well. A stroll through Casco Viejo, the 341 year old Spanish colonial sector & UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1671 is a must-do!
