The Strait of Gibraltar

Every year several sailing trips are organised by Clipper Stad Amsterdam. Whether you are an experienced sailor or not, we are more than pleased to invite you to join our crew on one of these adventurous sailing holidays.

Maó-Mahón, as Menorca's capital is officially called, is the starting point of this summer sailing adventure. It is the largest and most important city on the island, with many things to do and see. Tapas and sangria can be enjoyed on the square Placa d'Espanya, which is surrounded by historical buildings. You can also visit the monastery where you can find a traditional (fresh) market. You won't be bored for a second!

This sailing adventure begins on Tuesday 19th July from Menorca, along the Spanish coast, through the Strait of Gibraltar, then across the Atlantic Ocean to the north until finally arriving at the western tip of Brittany, in France.
One of the highlights of this trip will be sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. View both the southern coast of Spain and the northern coast of Morocco simultaneously from the deck or high up in one of the masts.

Leaving Menorca

The crew will be preparing early the next morning for the departure to Brest after you have spent your first night on board in one of the 14 comfortable cabins. We will be sailing about 1470 nautical miles in 12 days, which provides plenty of time to familiarize you with all the aspects of sailing a square-rigged ship.

Life onboard and the movements of the ship are experiences in themselves. You will handle the ropes on board, set the sails and navigate the ship with the help of our crew and if you wish, they will guide you up the mast with a breathtaking view as a reward. And it doesn't end there...

An unforgettable experience

Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, the sea being rough now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow will make you feel so insignificant in the overwhelming nature.
Enjoy the peace and quietness around you, be completely disconnected from our hectic lives at home, find the time to relax on the deck or in the longroom with a book from our well-stocked library, and have interesting conversations with the crew and the other guests.

The meals are enjoyed together with the crew in the longroom at times adjusted to the watches. Every night the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on a preceding day, the mileage still to go, and any other points of interest.

Sailing and watches

The ship’s crew stands watch in three shifts. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM), and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).

We welcome you to join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience the wonders of a square-rigged tall ship sailing. Setting or furling the sails, keeping the lookout, setting the course, or standing watch: you can participate in all of it. You may enjoy helping out in the galley and/or assisting the crew with onboard maintenance. There are plenty of options!

As a member of the Red Watch, you can enjoy the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch, you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before, whilst in the Blue Watch, you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

Arrival at Brest

Our ship will enter Brest's port in the evening on Saturday 30 July. Setting foot on the mainland again will take some getting used to! Following breakfast the next morning, our crew will bid you farewell and the sailing adventure has come to an end, unfortunately.

You might decide to stay in Brest for a few more days. The well-known Pointe du Raz near Finistère, for example, is a spectacular coastal point with 70-meter-high cliffs. Alternatively, take a stroll down Rue de Saint-Malo to see what remains of the old quarter after the World War II bombardment. Visit the world's oldest marine museum, which is housed at Brest Castle. And did you know that the funicular in Brest provides a stunning view of the city?

We hereby like to inform you that the safety of our guests and our crew is of the highest priority and that we follow up closely with all of the developments and the measures taken by the Dutch government concerning the coronavirus. In the context of the prevention of contamination with the COVID-19 (corona) virus, the Clipper Stad Amsterdam as an international passenger ship is bound by the measures prescribed by the Dutch government and the measures that apply worldwide onboard international passenger ships.

To create a safe and responsible environment onboard - where keeping a distance of 1.5 meters is not always possible - joining the Clipper is only possible for guests who meet the following requirements:
COVID vaccination
All guests are obliged to be fully vaccinated including the booster vaccination. The booster should be at least 2 weeks old. EU citizens will be asked to show their EU vaccination certificate with a QR code. We advise European guests to also print their QR codes and bring this on paper. Non-European guests are allowed to show their official paper proof of vaccination upon boarding.
NAAT/ PCR test
All guests are obliged to show a negative result of a PCR test with an international travel certificate, the moment the test was taken should be no more than 72 hours before boarding. Please note that an antigen rapid test will not be sufficient.
Antigen test
In addition to the PCR test, all guests are obliged to show a negative result of an antigen test with a certificate. The moment the test was taken should be no more than 24 hours before boarding.
Travel insurance
Taking out travel insurance is mandatory at all times on all our sailing trips. The mandatory travel insurance to be taken out by you must, in addition to, covering medical costs, accidents, and repatriation (article 13.9 of the general terms and conditions) also cover all COVID-19 related medical costs. When you take out your travel insurance please make sure that these costs are indeed covered.
It is recommended to take out trip cancellation insurance.

Cancellation
In unforeseen COVID-19-related situations involving force majeure, we offer a 100% refund guarantee concerning the travel sum paid to us. For all other - non-COVID - reasons to cancel, our usual terms and conditions apply.

Unfavourable weather conditions & maintenance
Please note that due to unfavourable weather conditions (e.g. lack of wind or too much wind) the captain may decide to proceed under engine power and/or arrive at or depart from a harbour either sooner or later. During our adventurous sailing trips, the crew of the Stad Amsterdam is also occupied with the continuous maintenance program of the Clipper. A part of life on board of the Tall Ships as well. Should you wish to help, this is welcome but certainly not a must.

Flight suggestions:
Please be advised that you must at all times be aware of and act by the travel advice and the corona measures that apply when you are travelling to and from the ship. Travelling to the ship and/or home is your own responsibility.
There are many flight opportunities from major (European) airports for attractive prices to Menorca.
From Amsterdam there are flights to Mahon with a stopover for € 161, - (4.5 hours).
Also from Brest, there are several flight opportunities to various (European) airports. For around €343,-, you may fly from Brest to Amsterdam in 5+ hours with a stopover.
Travelling by rail from Brest to Amsterdam, for example, takes 8.5 hours with two changes and costs about €120.00.
