Atlantic Ocean crossing part 2

On Saturday, May 20 the final preparations are being made on board the Stad Amsterdam for departure from Horta to the European mainland. This is the second and also final part of the Atlantic Ocean crossing and for the sailing enthusiast a true recommended experience.
Horta is located on the island of Faial in the western part of the Archipelago of the Azores and is accessible because of the international airport. The city has many wonderful view points and features a rich amount of monumental architecture. The marina is a primary stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic, and its walls, and walkways are covered in paintings created by visitors who noted the names of their vessels, crews, and the years they visited.

1800 nautical miles

The next morning we will set sail to Port-Vendres. For 14 days we will be sailing non-stop about 1800 nautical miles, passing the Strait of Gibraltar and along the east coast of Spain, to our final destination in the south of France. This trip will make your heart beat faster. A very unique experience!

On the morning of June 3rd the captain and his crew will have to say goodbye to you. Before going home you may want to explore Port-Vendres. Enjoy this beautiful Mediterranean seaside resort at the foot of the mountain Les Alberes offering a perfect combination of beach, history and nature parks. The imposing Fort Saint Elme for example is worth visiting for a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.

Sailing and watches

The ship’s crew stands watch in three shifts. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM) and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).

If you like, you can join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience the works on a ship like Stad Amsterdam. Setting the sails, keeping lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it.

As a member of the Red Watch you can enjoy the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before while in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

An unforgettable experience

The meals are enjoyed along with the crew in the long room at times adjusted to the watches. Every night the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on the day before, the mileage still to go and any other points of interest.

Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, being rough every now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow. On the other hand, one could also relax reading a book in the long room. We have a well-stocked library on board.

All and all ingredients for an unforgettable experience!
