Sailing Holiday from Spain to Gran Canaria

A number of sailing holidays are organized by the Clipper Stad Amsterdam every year. Whether you are an experienced sailor or not, we are more than pleased to invite you to join our crew on one of these adventures sailing holidays.

This adventurous sailing trips starts Monday November 12th in Tarragona where the captain and his crew will welcome you. Tarragona is a port city located in northeast Spain on the Costa Daurada and is just an hour's drive from Barcelona. The town has a very pleasant atmosphere and there are many relics from Roman times to admire. Outside terraces and delicious restaurants can easily be found in Tarragona as well.

After a good night sleep in one of the 14 luxury cabins on board your sailing voyage along the coast of Spain, through the Strait of Gibraltar and along the North African coast to Las Palmas de Canaria will begin.

Practical Information

An unforgettable experience

Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, being rough every now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow. On the other hand, one could also relax reading a book in the long room. We have a well-stocked library on board.

The meals are enjoyed together with the crew in the longroom at times adjusted to the watches. Every night the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on the day before, the mileage still to go and any other points of interest.

Sailing and watches

The ship’s crew stand watch in three shifts. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM) and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).

We welcome you to join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience how things work on a ship like the Stad Amsterdam. Setting or furling the sails, keeping lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it.

As a member of the Red Watch you can enjoy the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before, whilst in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

The Strait of Gribaltar

During the non-stop sailing for more than 8 days along the east coast of Spain on the Mediterranean Sea, through the famous Strait of Gibraltar and on the Atlantic Ocean you will learn the ins and outs of sailing on a three mast tallship and enjoy the spectacular views from the deck. Experience what it feels like to have the wind through your hair while you climb the mast all the way to the top!

Arrival in the harbor of Las Palmas is scheduled for the evening of November 20th. In the days before you have sailed about 1200 nautical miles. It will probably take some getting used to, to set foot ashore again the next morning. Perhaps you have decided to spend a few extra days in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. For a visit of the Cathedral de Santa Ana or the shops in the Calle Mayor. Or to relax on the golden-yellow beach with the many palm trees.
