Adventurous sailing from Cabo San Lucas to Balboa

From Mexico to Panama

A number of sailing trips are organized by the Clipper Stad Amsterdam every year. Whether you are an experienced sailor or not, we are pleased to invite you to join the crew on one of these adventurous sailing holidays.

On Thursday March 29th the captain and his crew will welcome you on board in Los Cabos located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. The sandy beaches, the many watersports activities like snorkeling, scuba diving and the excellent golf possibilities will make this an excellent starting point for a sailing holiday. A visit to nearby San José del Cabo with cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, and many boutiques and restaurants may be a fun activity as well.

Early Fridaymorning your fifteen days non-stop voyage begins! On this sea voyage many aspects of sailing on a Clipper will occur.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Clipper Ship enthusiasts

It will take quite some effort from crew and vessel to sail the ship to her destination in Panama. For 2 weeks non-stop - no ports will be visited along the way - you will be working together with the crew and learn all about the techniques of square rig sailing. At sea not a day will be the same and completing the nearly 2300 miles in total will be an unforgettable experience.

Please note that at this time of year it is expected that there will be a number of days with unfavorable (head)winds in which case the engine will be turned on to guarantee our scheduled arrival date. However with certainty we can say that there will be enough to do and many instructions to learn from our crew and captain.

An unforgettable experience

Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, being rough every now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow. On the other hand, one could also relax reading a book in the long room. We have a well-stocked library on board.

The meals are enjoyed together with the crew in the longroom at times adjusted to the watches. Every evening the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on the day before, the mileage still to go and any other points of interest.

Sailing and watches

The ship’s crew stand watch in three shifts. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM) and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).

We welcome you to join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience how things work on a ship like the Stad Amsterdam. Setting or furling the sails, keeping lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it.

As a member of the Red Watch you can enjoy the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before, whilst in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

Destination Balboa

On April 14th the Clipper Stad Amsterdam will arrive at Balboa and your non-stop sailing adventure will come to an end.

Balboa is located at the Pacific-side of the Panama Canal and Panama City is only a short distance away. A stroll through "Casco Viejo", the 341 year old Spanish colonial sector & UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just one of the many activities this wonderful city has to offer.
