Every year a number of adventure sailing trips are organized by the Clipper Stad Amsterdam. Whether you are an experienced sailor or not, we are more than pleased to invite you to join our crew on one of these adventures. More information about our adventurous sailing trips.

From Panama to the United States

A number of sailing trips are organized by the Clipper Stad Amsterdam every year. Whether you are an experienced sailor or not, we are more than pleased to invite you to join the crew on one of these adventurous sailing holidays.

This sailing trip starts in Balboa, the Pacific-side port of the Panama Canal. The town is located only a short distance from Panama City and was founded by the United States during the construction of the Panama Canal. After your arrival at the international airport in Panama City you may have time for a stroll through "Casco Viejo". This 341 year old Spanish colonial sector & UNESCO World Heritage Site certainly is worth a visit!

On Friday January 19th the captain and his crew will welcome you on board and after a night in the harbor your sailing adventure will begin early the next morning. A non-stop voyage from Panama to San Diego for about 20 days during which many aspects of sailing on a Clipper will occur.

Clipper Ship enthusiasts

It will take quite some effort from crew and vessel to sail the ship to her destination in California, U.S.A. For 3 weeks non-stop - no ports will be visited along the way - you will be working together with the crew and learn all about the techniques of square rig sailing. At sea not one day will be the same and completing the nearly 3000 miles in total will be an unforgettable experience.

Please note that at this time of year it is expected that there will be a number of days with unfavorable (head)winds in which case the engine will be turned on to guarantee our scheduled arrival date. However with certainty we can say that there will be enough to do and many instructions to learn from our crew and captain.

An unforgettable experience

Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, being rough every now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow. On the other hand, one could also relax reading a book in the long room. We have a well-stocked library on board.

The meals are enjoyed together with the crew in the longroom at times adjusted to the watches. Every evening the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on the day before, the mileage still to go and any other points of interest.

Sailing and watches

The ship’s crew stand watch in three shifts. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM) and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).

We welcome you to join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience how things work on a ship like the Stad Amsterdam. Setting or furling the sails, keeping lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it.

As a member of the Red Watch you can enjoy the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before, whilst in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

Destination San Diego

On February 8th you will be part of Clipper Stad Amsterdam's first arrival at San Diego. In this major American city your sailing adventure will come to an end.

San Diego is located in Southern California close to the Mexican border. The climate is very pleasant with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures. When you have the time, you may want to visit the famous San Diego Zoo or stroll through the historic center to admire the Spanish architecture of colonial times.

Would you rather spend your time relaxing? San Diego has many miles of beaches ideal for surfing and sunbathing. And when the San Diego Maritime Museum is on your list of things-to-do, the "Star of India" will most likely have your attention. This ship has many similarities to the Clipper Stad Amsterdam.
