Atlantic Ocean crossing part 2

A number of sailing trips are organized by the Clipper Stad Amsterdam every year. Whether you are an experienced sailor or not, we are more than pleased to invite you to join our crew on one of these adventurous sailing holidays.

After final preparations and provisioning in the port of Ponta Delgada (the Azores), we will continue our ocean crossing to the European mainland. This is the second and also final part of the Atlantic Ocean crossing and for the sailing enthusiast a true recommended experience.

The beautiful and cosy town of Ponta Delgada is located on the Portuguese island of São Miguel, which is part of the islands group of the Azores and is easily accessible by plane.
Enjoy the small streets with white and coloured houses in Portuguese style, the old churches and impressive squares. The crater lakes, the rugged coastline and the wonderful green nature make this a fantastic island to stay for a few days. Visit, for example, the volcano crater of Sete Cidades or the inactive volcano Do Fogo and the nearby lake ......

Practical Information

Ponta Delgada

1600 nautical miles

The next morning we will set sail to Port-Vendres in the south of France. For 11 days we will be sailing non-stop about 1600 nautical miles, passing the Strait of Gibraltar and along the east coast of Spain, to our final destination in the south of France. This trip will make your heart beat faster. A very unique experience!

Sailing and watches

The ship’s crew stands watch in three shifts. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM) and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).

If you like, you can join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience the works on a ship like Stad Amsterdam. Setting the sails, keeping the lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it.

As a member of the Red Watch, you can admire the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before while in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

An unforgettable experience

The meals are enjoyed along with the crew in the long room at times adjusted to the watches. Every night the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on the day before, the mileage still to go and any other points of interest.

Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, being rough every now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow. On the other hand, one could also relax reading a book in the long room. We have a well-stocked library on board.

All and all ingredients for an unforgettable experience!

Arrival in Port-Vendrès

On the morning of May 20th, the captain and his crew will have to say goodbye to you. Before going home you may want to explore Port-Vendres. Enjoy this beautiful Mediterranean seaside resort at the foot of the mountain Les Alberes offering a perfect combination of beach, history and nature parks. The imposing Fort Saint Elme, for example, is worth visiting for a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.

We hope you had a wonderful stay with us!
