Kiel & the Kieler Woche

Every year a number of sailing trips are organized by the Clipper Stad Amsterdam. Whether you are an experienced sailor or not, we are more than pleased to invite you to join our crew on one of these adventurous sailing holidays.
In August 2020 the Clipper will start on a voyage around the world: The World Tour.

This 7-day adventurous sailing trip starts in Kiel. The city is located at the 17-kilometre-long Kieler Fjord which flows into the Baltic Sea. Kiel has the reputation of being the sailing capital of Germany. Every year the world's largest sailing regatta is organized in Kiel with the Windjammer Parade - this year on Saturday June 27 - as the absolute highlight. The "Kieler Woche" will almost be over when you embark on the Clipper on Sunday. Your first night on board will be spent in the harbour in one of our 14 comfortable cabins after a delicious dinner served in our longroom.

From the Baltic Sea to the North Sea

The next morning we will leave the harbour and set sail for London. On our exceptional three-master we will start with taking you over the Baltic Sea and along several Danish islands: a unique and wonderful sailing area. There will be plenty of opportunities to hoist a sail together with our crew, stand on the lookout, working aloft or steer the ship as helmsman if you like.
Sailing underneath the imposing Great Belt Bridge will be next. This 65 meters high suspension bridge consists of several parts and has a total length of 18 kilometres.
The voyage will continue through the Kattegat and along the Danish isles of Anholt and Laeso. After passing Denmark's northernmost town Skagen and the sea strait Skagerrak we will arrive at the  North Sea.The village Skagen is a very popular destination for tourists. The rugged landscape is shaped by sandstorms in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
We will then be sailing along the west coast of Denmark characterized by countless bays, straits and inlets. At the Wadden Sea area, the landscape tends to look more and more Dutch with numerous polders. Finally, the Clipper will sail on Britain's most important waterway "The Thames" to the famous Tower Bridge. A smashing end of this voyage!

An unforgettable experience

Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, being rough every now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow. On the other hand, one could also relax reading a book in the longroom. We have a well-stocked library on board.

The meals are enjoyed along with the crew in the longroom at times adjusted to the watches. Every night the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on the day before, the mileage still to go and any other points of interest.

All and all ingredients for an unforgettable experience!

Sailing and watches

The ship’s crew rotates in three shifts, called watches. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM) and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).

If you like, you can join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience the works on a ship like Stad Amsterdam. Setting the sails, keeping lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it.

As a member of the Red Watch, you can admire the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before while in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

London: a bustling city

On arrival near the Tower Bridge on Sunday morning, you have a wonderful view on deck of the London skyline with the famous bridge, the financial district, the Tower, the Big Ben, the parliament buildings and even the London Eye.

At noon it is time to say goodbye to the captain, crew and fellow travellers and the metropolis can be explored for those who have some extra time. Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus, Westminster Abbey, Covent Garden, Harrods, St. Paul’s Cathedral are just a few of London's many sights.
