Departure from the Netherlands

Every year a number of sailing trips are organized by the Clipper Stad Amsterdam. Whether you are an experienced sailor or not, we are more than pleased to invite you to join our crew on one of these adventurous sailing holidays.
In August 2020 the Clipper will start on a voyage around the world in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: The SDG World Tour.

This weekend sailing trip is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Clipper from up close and full action! With London City Center as the final destination, this has to be the perfect trip.
The Clipper will leave the port of  IJmuiden and set course to the North Sea on the evening of embarkation. After an extensive 5 months lasting maintenance period in preparation for the trip around the world, this trip will be the start of an exciting new sailing season.

200 nautical miles

The 200 nautical miles to London are covered with an average speed of 5.3 knots. The wind direction will determine our course. On this trip, we sail on one of the busiest seas in the world and many ships will pass us by. We will reach the Thames Estuary in Great Britain after the crossing of the North Sea.
In the meantime there will be plenty of opportunity to hoist a sail together with our crew, stand on the lookout, work aloft or steer the ship as helmsman.

Sailing on Britain's most important waterway "The Thames" means enjoying the English landscape while London's characteristic buildings and sights are getting closer and closer. The berth location at the famous Tower Bridge will be the smashing end of the voyage!

An unforgettable experience

Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, being rough every now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow. On the other hand, one could also relax reading a book in the longroom. We have a well-stocked library on board.

The meals are enjoyed along with the crew in the longroom at times adjusted to the watches. Every night the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on the day before, the mileage still to go and any other points of interest.

All and all ingredients for an unforgettable experience!

Sailing and watches

The ship’s crew stands watch in three shifts. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM) and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).

If you like, you can join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience the works on a ship like Stad Amsterdam. Setting the sails, keeping lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it.

As a member of the Red Watch, you can admire the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before while in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.

London is the place to be

On arrival near the Tower Bridge on Sunday at noon, you have a wonderful view on deck of the London skyline with the famous bridge, the financial district, the Tower, the Big Ben, the parliament buildings and even the London Eye.

At 2 p.m. when it is time to say goodbye to the captain, crew and fellow travellers, the metropolis can be explored for those who have some extra time. Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus, Westminster Abbey, Covent Garden, Harrods, St. Paul’s Cathedral are just a few of London's many sights.
