10 days photography & sailing voyage from Martinique

Through the eyes of a photographer

Tropical islands, nice temperatures and a cool breeze. The Clipper Stad Amsterdam departs in February for a ten day sailing voyage through the Caribbean. The three mast tall ship, unspoiled beaches and colourful inhabitants ensure unique images. Reason enough to invite photographer Thijs Heslenfeld ( www.tijdheslendfeld.com ) to join us.

Heslenfeld, one of the most successful Dutch travel photographers, will give you a glimpse though his eyes. An inspiring new look which will change your photography. The workshops are not exclusively for serious amateurs, anyone who enjoys making pictures is welcome to learn and practice in a relaxed atmosphere. The kind of camera you use in not important either. And those who prefer to travel without a camera, can join a local guide to see the islands.

All participants will receive prior to departure a signed copy of Thijs Heslenfeld’s latest book ‘Hot – Life in the Australian outback ’.

Embarkation: February 4th, 2011, 17:00 Martinique
Debarkation: February 13th, 2011, 10:00 Martinique

The Journey starts and ends in Fort de France, the capitol of the Island Martinique. The international Airport is near Fort de France.

Sailing on the trade winds from island to island we have the possibility to visit the best places:

Saint Vincent is the main island of the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. A part of the beaches of this deep-green island is black from the volcanic sand. The dense forest starts directly at the beach. The seabed rises fast. For a dozen meters the coast is flat but then she climbs steep in the direction of the volcano Soufrière with a height of 1234 meters. Wallilabou Bay on the island St. Vincent is the bay where a part of the movie “The pirates of the Caribbean” is filmed. With our anchor from the bow and a thick mooring line from the stern to a palmtree the Clipper Stad Amsterdam is moored at the filmset.

From Admirality Bay on the small island Bequia, we can make a trip over land. We will soon see the characteristic bright colored fishing vessels. Those vessels join for the famous Bequia Easter Regatta in springtime. We might catch one of the small ships under sail with our camera. We can also go to the deserted windward bays on the island. The spray of salt water from the never ending ocean swell that breaks on the coast, lingers between the trees. A lot of sea turtles live in the area. In the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary the deprived turtles can guarantee us beautiful photo's.

Photographer Thijs Heslenfeld can teach you how to make pictures in translucent blue water. We can learn this on a snorkel trip on a classic location in the Caribbean: The Tobago Cays. Snappers, Rays, Blowfish, Parrotfish etc. etc. A day in paradise like this we should end with a barbecue.

On Saint Lucia we can go at anchor in Rodney Bay. This Hurricane Hole is a good start for a trip into nature. The enormous cascades are overwhelming. For the first time on this trip we will have to take a sweater or jacket with us. When we climb the hill of the volcano, the wind increases and the temperature drops significantly.

Of course we will have a lot of chances to photograph the Clipper Stad Amsterdam in her full glory. A few times on this trip we will travel greater distances and sail through the Caribbean night at sea. The crew will definitely ask you to put your camera down and give a hand with sail handling. During daylight we can also enjoy the variety of different birds and fishes. Whales are hard to get in front of your lens, but the dolphins that play on the bowwave seem easier to photograph.

Join us with your camera on a wonderful trip through the nature of the Caribbean.
