Rest

Every day we gain some latitude to the north and that is very clear on the deck. The sun is very bright and while approaching the equator the air is becoming moist. Once in a while a small shower wets the deck. We can see some grey haze under the clouds but the temperature is not lowering. It is the opposite. Last week we had to wear long trousers, this week the lightest clothing is still too warm at night.
We are now two weeks at sea and it will take several weeks before we will see the first land. For a lot of people that seems to be torture, but those who have made a long sea voyage before know better. The sea, that can be fierce sometimes, does give a certain rest. Modern communication techniques disturb the peace but there is still enough to enjoy. The enjoyment is visible on the faces of our crew on this Sunday. Joseph Conrad can be quoted on this: “The true peace of God begins at any spot a thousand miles from the nearest land”.
