Perils of the sea
Everybody has recovered, they only needed to adjust to the ship’s motion. Breakfast was therefore well attended this morning. We are still making 10 knots underway to Adelaide.
The wrecking of the Titanic was the reason for establishing international rules and regulations for shipping. In the course of the years these rules have been adapted after the findings from investigations after various shipping disasters.
Therefore we organize a fire drill on a weekly basis. We do however exercise for other emergencies than a shipboard fire. One of them is a procedure in case of a danger of collision.
A piece of Antarctic ice is underway to Australia. Last year an enormous iceberg broke off the ice mass and is now adrift in the Southern Ocean. This happens all the time and while drifting north it starts melting. This iceberg however, is so big that according to various scientists it should be able to reach the Australian mainland.
Currently we are still 1500 nautical miles North East off this specific berg. That would mean only a week’s sail to get there, but the vessel is heading another course. We expect to arrive in Adelaide around noon the day after tomorrow.
We are also very grateful that we have left Chile some time ago. We wish the Chilean people all the best after the dreadful earthquake they suffered.
