Water cycling
“Ready for the Oceans” was once the slogan when the Clipper Stad Amsterdam touches water for the first time. The Clipper already proved in her ten year life, that she is capable to sail on the ocean, but now she proves her motto really good. She is build for the Trade Wind kind of Oceans, and we enjoy it!
She is relatively light and with a cut hull and a large amount of rigs, these Trade Wind conditions are ideal. Since we left the Galapagos, we got a running wind blowing in our sails. The average speed of this wind is 15 knots, enough to reach a speed of 8.5 knots.
Knots stand for nautical mile an hour, for the wheel-riding readers, this is about 16 Kilometers an hour. ‘A cyclist goes faster’, is a comment I hear now and then.
The first cyclist who can reach such an average crossing the Pacific, will make an impression on me.
