Moored in IJmuiden
With a trip of no more than two hours through the Amsterdam Port Area we have concluded our daytrip period in the Netherlands. Yesterday and today the Clipper was put to use by the Amsterdam Port Company; starting from our berth at the Westerdoksdijk the route took us east to where all port activities began and from there to the westerly situated ports at the North Sea Channel. From the IJ one has a beautiful insight in how the port has developed through the ages. The eastern part with the Easter docks, the “Schreiers toren” (weeping tower) and the moving of economic activities to the west after the North Sea Channel was dug.
The three trips we could make were all filled with very enthusiastic Amsterdam people. Although a trip through the harbour is not really a challenge for a fast sailing Clipper made for the world seas it was an absolute interesting travel through time. The City that gave our ship her name is a sight worth seeing, especially from the water where, just like on the Clipper itself, the historic appearance is not been put to the background by the modern building techniques.
